Paid $1000 retainer told me they were keeping it. Still trying to get it back through the courts. Took 6 months to serve divorce papers.

This is not an accurate statement. The spouse was avoiding service of process, and could not be served by a private process server. The retainer was nothing more than the competitive attorney fee and the filing fees and expenses.
